The product ‘Heart Pump for R&D‘, SKU: HP-A01 is a motor pump that enables the beating functionality of the heart phantom and supports adjustable beating rate from 0 BPM – 140 BPM. It creates an artificial pressure & motion inside the heart chambers to give realistic imaging results.

  • Beating heart model with the cyclic motion of the heart walls based on a mechanical pump

It can be purchased separately or with a heart phantom and standard water tank. The water tank as shown below (Image 5-8) is an optional product that assists in the mounting of the Aorta and IVC and provides catheter access. However, the pump is independent of the water tank and can be used with any water container.

 

When operating with Heart phantom, submerge the phantom inside a bucket or tank filled with water to perform the experiments. No special fluid is required to simulate the circulation inside the chambers, just mineral water would do the job. Please see the images below for the pump setup with the water tank and heart.

The pump can also be used with our advanced R&D Torso to simulate the motion of the heart phantom inside in the torso. Upon request, we can customize the Torso to provide any custom access to the heart and its chambers for any cardio-based research & development. Advanced R&D Torso

Instructions to setup the pump with heart phantom(optional):

  1. Connect the primary tubes with the syringes installed in the heart pump as it is shown on the following image:

  2. Connect the “primary tubes” with the “secondary tubes” and the “secondary tubes” with the heart installed in a water tank as it us shown on the two following pictures. Note that some of the tubes are marked with blue zip ties. Make sure that all the marked tubes are connected together.
  3. Place the two tubes of the “primary tubes” in a basket filled with water as shown on the picture:

Degassing Procedure:

  1. Set the stroke to the second last slot on both rotating disks (make sure that there is a phase shift between left and right syringe – 180 degrees for best and fastest results)Please refer to Images A, B, and C below.
  2. Set the valve switches to the positionPlease refer to Images A, B, and C below.
  3. Let the pump run initially at a slow speed until both syringes are filled with water (note that it will take some time to fill the heating chamber) –Please refer to Images A, B, and C below.
  4. Once both syringes have some water (they do not need to be full), increase the speed of the pump to medium (70 BPM) – Please refer to Images A, B, and C below.
  5. Let the pump run until there are no visible air bubbles underneath the surface of the heart – Please refer to Images A, B, and C below.

Closing the water circulation:

  1. Once the pump is degassed, switch the valves to the following position (Please refer to Image D below.)

WARNINIG!

WHEN USING WITH HEART PHANTOM – ALWAYS ENSURE THAT THE VALVES ARE OPEN AT LEAST IN ONE DIRECTION WHEN THE HEART PUMP RUNNING! FAILURE TO DO WILL RESULT IN OVER PRESSURIZING EITHER THE PUMP OR THE HEART!

 

Adjusting the stroke and phase:

  1. The stroke and phase can be adjusted with 15ml amplitude and 45° phase increment.
  2. To adjust those two parameters, simply move the screw shown on the image on the next page to the desired location (use the included thread locker and primer to prevent the screws from unscrewing themselves).
  3. Always make sure to set the same amplitude on both syringes. Failure to do so will result in over-pressurizing the heart phantom!
  4. If the thread locker was used wait about one hour to let it cure before using the pump.
  5. Once both the stroke and phase are set, the heart phantom is ready to operate! Please refer to Image A

Special Instructions:

  • Scanning the phantom

The phantom is fabricated based on the anatomy of real human heart and it can be scanned in supine, prone and fowler’s positions, more importantly, scanning can be performed from multi directions.

For ultrasound applications, this phantom can be scanned either with or without the ultrasonic gel
For MRI or X-Ray CT applications, the artificial heart can be filled with any common contrast agents.
  • Filling the phantom with blood mimicking fluid or water
Adult Heart Phantom for Medical Research and Training The phantom can be filled with most type of blood mimicking fluids using a big syringe or water pump. If there is a concern that a chosen blood mimicking fluid may cause damage to the phantom, it is recommended to do a small test on the side of the soft tissue material.
The chosen liquid should be left on the phantom for at least few hours. If there is no visible effect on the surface of the phantom, it is safe to assume that the phantom is resistant to the tested chemical and hence it is safe to use it to fill out the entire heart. 
  • Storage and Handling
The phantom is made of urethane-based material and it should be protected from a direct exposure of any strong UV light.
The experiments conducted on phantom can be performed in a sunny lab but it is not recommended to leave the phantom under direct sunlight for weeks or months. If the phantom is not in use, we strongly recommend storing it in a dry and dark place.
  • Cleaning
The phantom is water resistant and it can be cleaned after its use. It is ideal to clean it either with water or with soapy water.
The phantom is relatively resistant to chemicals but if stronger solvents are meant to be used with the phantom, we recommend doing a small test on the small part of the flat soft tissue. The chosen solvent can be applied on the small part of the phantom for a few hours.
If there is no visible effect on the surface of the phantom it is safe to assume that the phantom is resistant to the tested chemical and it is safe to use it for the rest of phantom (including inside of the heart). In other cases, avoid the solvent or contact us for alternatives.
